Mountainberry had the reputation of being a safe, quiet small town in rural Ontario. All that was about to change. In 1862 the original Harrisons, driven by desperation participated in an ancient arcane ritual and crossed a spiritual line. The door had been opened, permission granted, and evil began its spread throughout the generations to follow. A secret group called The Order held Mountainberry in a spiritual chokehold which was slowly tightening over the years. Each member was an important member of the society and was backed by his own demon which was under the authority of a territorial spirit. The battle lines were being drawn to play out in an epic battle in modern times.
August 21, 1983, 7:30 p.m. The Harrison farmhouse on the outskirts of Mountainberry, a small Ontario town. It was done! Tom Jacobs stood frozen in horror looking down at himself. Blood! Where’d all this blood come from? His trembling hands were sticky with blood. Panicked, he looked at his splattered shirt terrified of what he would find as he lifted it and checked for wounds. There were none. Whose blood is this? From somewhere inside the murk of his traumatized mind, the horrendous answer rose to the surface like a bubble of gas in a foul swamp. No! No! What have I done? Reality forced its way back into his blurred consciousness threatening to tear Tom's fragile web of sanity. His body began to shake violently. The coppery smell of blood overwhelmed his senses and he vomited. He held his head and wept. It was too much! Too much! Reeling, his mind began to retreat into a softer world. He heard a car coming up the driveway and saw the Mercedes returning for him. On mental autopilot Tom stumbled to the driveway in a state of shock. A stranger stepped out of the car, walked past Tom to look around and returned several minutes later. "Well done Tom! Take your backpack and get in." Tom slumped into the back onto a plastic sheet protecting the upholstery. The stranger slid in the front seat, closed the car door and signaled for the driver to go. He looked over his left shoulder to Tom. "You'll have nothing to worry about any more Tom. We’ll protect you. The Order takes care of its own." Tom sat there numb, staring ahead with empty eyes. Had it only been three hours since he had been dropped off to complete his " assignment" at the side road leading to the Harrison farmhouse?...... Chapter 1 August 21, 1983, four and a half hours earlier. Over four monotonous hours, the hum of the Mercedes' tires had lulled, Tom Jacobs into a stupor. The driver's words slapped Tom out of his trance.” We’re about half an hour away from the Harrison farm. Are you clear on your assignment?" The look in the driver's eyes made Tom squirm like freshly pierced bait. “Yeah, I know what I have to do.", he mumbled. Life had kicked Tom Jacobs in the stomach -- hard, - and had denied him a chance to heal. He made a pathetic picture as he slumped in the passenger seat. His once toned, muscular body was crushed beneath the weight of alcoholism, poverty and rejection. Baldness advanced like a conquering army, claiming ever increasing territory. The "assignment" had been given to him by the Grand Master at the National Meeting of The Order. An incident in the small Ontario town of Mountainberry had mushroomed into a serious problem for the organization. Tom ran the story through his head for the umpteenth time. Some farm woman looked more delicious than the pies she was selling at the end of her lane. A "big shot" member of The Order was driving by, and decided to help himself. What's the big deal? She was probably asking for it. Most women were. They pretend they don't like the rough stuff, but men know better. So she got roughed up and went crying to her idiot husband who decided to press charges. Boredom sucked the vitality out of Tom like a vampire. He fought back by allowing the incident to play out in his imagination. His eyes closed as the curtain went up on his own version. -- “Mr. Bigshot" was probably driving with the top of his convertible down. He had come into Mountainberry from Halifax for some big meeting. The day was hot, was he and probably looking for a little action. Then he saw her. She was sitting behind a card table loaded with homemade pies. Sweat beaded on her body, molding her T-shirt around her curves. Her full lips sucked on a water bottle as she tried to cool off. Mr. Bigshot could read the signs. He pulled over and walked toward the pies. "Are these luscious things for sale?" She looked up at him, her smoldering eyes full of promise. "What particular luscious things did you want?" Her voice was husky. "What have you got?" She stood up and lifted her heavy blond hair off the back of her neck with one hand to let the breeze cool her. She looked over at the pies. "You name it, I've got it. Sweet and ready to go." He realized he could not contain himself much longer. "Well I'm ready to go too!" He grabbed her right arm, pulling her toward the bushes. Tom's rendition of the situation got confused here. If she were so ready, why did she resist? After all, she was asking for it, wasn't she? Maybe she wasn’t, he admitted to himself, reluctantly allowing reality to change his seductive scenario. He watched as the new version of the movie played out on his mind's screen. She struggled, pulling against him and pounding his face with her left fist. "Get your hands off me! Let me go!" He never let anyone hit him.
SJ Smith always knew that there were other dimensions besides this physical one. Her search for an understanding of the unknown realms led her down many paths before, at the age of 28, she had an encounter with Jesus. After retiring from high school teaching in order to have her children she began to have many spiritual experiences including two years of intense work in what was then called the "deliverance" ministry. Sue became a member of the ministry team at Singing Waters ministry in Orangeville Ontario and has had many years of experience walking people into freedom through the power of God in their lives. "One day I just decided that I had had enough in seeing books and movies portraying the dark forces as all-consuming and all-powerful and God as being a weak runner-up. I thought it was time to tell the truth about what happens when these forces collide. We, as believers, need a wake-up call! We lose too many battles by default."
"I just finished The Harrison Curse and could not put it down!!! I learned a lot about how evil can enter into such small places in your mind and life, but if you call upon Jesus, He is always there and will never let you down. As well as the lessons it taught me, it was a wonderful suspense novel and I cannot wait for the sequel. What a fantastic book!!!!
