About the Author
THE NATURE OF ANGELS In the spring of 1863, Gabriel Lamach finds himself in a hole so deep that hope of extrication is beyond all reason. As the owner of the largest hardware business in Cincinnati, Gabriel delivers a massive government order of materiel to Colonel Zagan, the procurement officer for Grant’s Army of the Tennessee. However, Colonel Zagan duly informs Gabriel that he is drafted into the army forthwith. There is nothing Gabriel can do. He can’t reason with Zagan, and he can’t desert. Ultimately, he finds himself embroiled in the Battle of Champion Hill where he is grievously wounded. Major Aamon, the unscrupulous cashiering officer, insults and tries to cheat Gabriel, enraging him to the point that he assaults the major, leaving his dashingly handsome face bloody and disfigured, takes the money due him and flees, fearing he has committed murder. He finds his way back to Cincinnati only to learn that his son, Irin, has left home out of despondency and is saddle tramping his way to Seattle. Gabriel and his wife, Hope, immediately set out to find Irin and to bring him home. Irin encounters many depraved men on the road and is forced to kill repeatedly, thus making him a wanted man, a man pursued by men who hunt and kill men for dollars. Major Aamon, still alive following Gabriel’s attack, swears grisly revenge against the ‘nail salesman’ who turned his face into that of a gargoyle’s, and, together with his aide, Sergeant Scox and three vile battlefield scavengers, one of whom, Bune, is a monstrous leviathan, set out in search of Gabriel. The pursuits are relentless, the fighting horrific, pitiless, and brutal, all of which reveals the true nature of angels.
