Poignant gospel comedy, targeted toward the Religious/Gospel imprint of your publishing house. This story is geared toward the young adult and adult audience. It’s a light-hearted but serious and frank story set in the ‘80’s and follows a group of Afro-Americans in the early years of the AIDS / HIV epidemic and how faith plays a role in how they dealt with it. “Can’t Choose Who You Love” focus’ on the 2 main characters, Jasmine and Darius, how they fall in love and stay in love while confronting the reality that one of them is infected with this dreaded and deadly mysterious illness. The illness tests their faith or lack of it as well as the strength of their feelings. It also tests their friendships. This story confronts stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding this disease during early days and years of its inception, paying particular attention to how it was viewed in the Afro-American community. Those who read this will laugh, at the same time they are given a retrospective look back in time as well as peek into what shaped then and still, in many ways, influences how the Afro-American community addresses and views this disease that continues to affect it so greatly today.
