The book is a guide about step by step conversion of a gas car to electric augmented by clear simple explanations about the EV and alternative energy sources..
Install high-current & low-current components Auxiliary battery, DC-DC converter, Auxiliary fuse panel, Throttle pot box, Battery charger and charger interlock are the more important elements. They come with installation steps and diagram with clear instructions, including safety issues. If any additional help is needed in the installation process you can easily look the part up over the net. Below are some simple guidelines. An electric vehicle wiring boils down to four basic systems: propulsion or high voltage, 12 volt accessory or low voltage and charging system. The driver's displays and controls constitute the fourth system. The onboard charging system plugs into the 120 VAC washer/dryer outlets converted to DC power to charge the batteries. The pot box (potentiometer) links to the accelerator, the voltmeter and ammeter measure the propulsion system amperage. The battery pack to propel the EV puts out high current, up to 300 amps, requiring heavy duty 2/0 welding cable and heavy duty lugs for connections. As high as 400 amp fuse should be used in the circuit. Prevent corrosion by coating ach battery terminal with anticorrosive material such as Maalox. Except for the 12 volt battery heavier wiring, 16 gauge wiring is used throughout the EV for ignition wire, accessories, and components. On turning the key to start the circuit is closed but unless the accelerator is pressed current will not flow to the motor as a precaution. Another safety feature the charger interlock relay opens the contactor during charging to prevent the car from being driven off. Install batteries Car battery installation tips: •Read and follow specific instructions or concerns from the owner and manufacturer’s manual. •Always use proper eye protection. •Disconnect the negative cable first. (Doing the opposite can cause a spark, and possible explosion.) •If connectors don't come off easily don't force them. Let a professional take care of them so not to risk damaging a battery post and avoid a corrosive spill or leakage. •Apply corrosion protection. •Remember to securely take the old battery to a recycling station for recycling or proper disposal. Now the moment has arrived to test you conversion. Charge the batteries and do a final inspection of the 12 volt system. Make sure there is no kink or damage to the propulsion system wiring. Check the fuses for shorts. Inspect the battery terminals for adequate contact and connection. Look for and remediate any structural weakness or damage. Get set…….. Go. Disclaimer and word of caution: Electric Vehicles and their conversion are associated with certain inherent hazards including risks of injury to you. By being aware such you can reduce or prevent the risks and hazards that could result in damage to the vehicle and serious injury to you. The information is presented to you in good faith and any such injury or hazards should be addressed with the manufacturers or services providers. We do not endorse any of them and you are solely responsible for taking proper precautions when lifting/handling heavy objects and manipulating corrosive or dangerous materials requiring common sense or instructional precautions when applicable.
