A Peek in the Closet is an intimate look at the lives of a group of gay men as recalled by a woman who loved them and shared their lives. You may learn to love differently, become wiser and gain greater understanding of a very real part of society that lives in the closet.
INSPIRATION For the past two years, I have been at the bedside of a woman so unique and rare that as well as I know, respect, admire and profoundly love her, I am still at a loss to adequately describe her. She personifies honesty, integrity, goodness and always grace under fire. Seriously ill, uncomplaining as always, she deserved the fight of my life to help her hold on to her life. I tried everything that I knew to keep her cognitive powers alive, believing that she could be restored to a quality of life, both physically and mentally, that she so rightly deserved. I utilized music and the spoken word, the latter of which included reading the bible, poetry, and inspirational material and the sharing of humorous stories recalling old and dear friends and loved ones. I would talk for hours and hours, day after day. One memory led to another and another and various themes developed. Certain of the memories led to my subject of choice for this writing: my first year away from home, living in a dazzling, awesome, exciting city, Chicago, meeting my first two real male friends and the subsequent friendships that grew out of these first friends. These memories will, I hope, entertain and enlighten you. The sharing of these memories contributed immensely in restoring my friend. It also benefited me and brought smiles and happiness to both my friend and me; a welcomed respite from worry filled nights and days at the bedside of a gravely ill dear friend now on the mend.
April Savannah was one of the youngest female executives in private industry, an accomplished law enforcement agent and CEO/CFO of a highly successful private corporation. She has been blessed and enriched by her exposure to the diversity of humanity through her world travels.
