Mudslide is the first of five books in the Misadventures of Sarah Davies, and it's where the team of teens bond together and become the main characters of the series. Sarah Davies and her cousin Meagan set out on a grade 12 class trip along the Snake River in Idaho for a three-day hiking trip. The horrifying dream she had the night before is soon put aside as she realizes that she is teamed with the football icon who she has secretly admired all year. But things are not what they seem, and soon the fun trip turns to a horrific nightmare when team conflicts and unexpected storms trap Sarah's team in the direct path of a deadly mudslide. She is buried in mud and when she finds Meagan they team with Ali and Brad to find the missing classmates who fell victim to the rampage of the mudslide. This action-packed adventure becomes a fast-paced race against time as Sarah has to overcome conflicts and her own fears to survive the storms that lie ahead.
As I stood there gaping at Rick, a cold, deathly chill crawled up my back right into the nape of my neck and I thought I was going to die. It’s like the oak tree was still whispering in my ear, only this time it was so clear. I knew something horrible was waiting for us. Were we going to fall victim to a mudslide? For a few seconds I felt totally paralyzed. This is what the warning was about. I knew it now. Meagan and Amanda ran ahead to join the others in calling Rick off the tree. Beth began flapping her hands and whining, and then she pushed away from Rick as she jumped back onto the bank. I couldn’t speak. For the next few seconds I saw flashes of people screaming in horror and I was ter-rified. Rick crawled over the fallen tree to retrieve the flag, ignoring everyone’s screams. Then he jumped up and down like a foolish little schoolboy waving the flag in the air. And that’s when it started. I could hear that gushing sound that I’d heard on the bridge and it made my skin crawl. I knew that it would only be a matter of minutes until the final ex-plosion and the mud would begin to slide. Mr. Baker was waving at us frantical-ly and yelling for us to get away from the muddy ledge. “I got it. I got the flag,” Rick kept chanting. Mr. Baker continued to scream for Rick to get off the tree, but he just laughed at him. Then he fell over and couldn’t get up. Beth was near him on the bank and began yelling at Rick, saying that he was drunk, but Mr. Baker grabbed her arm and shoved her towards us. “Get over there with the others. Go on.” Mr. Baker and I looked up at the same time to the muddy ledge that hung above us. “Get out of there! Hurry up! Sarah, go!” I could hear it moving - so slowly - but it was moving. I took a deep breath and screamed for Meagan, and she ran back to me as I pointed to the ledge. Meagan’s eyes bugged out. “Oh, my god. Come on, Sarah. Let’s get out of here. That’s coming down.” Just then, Amanda slipped in the wet mud and began whining so Meagan ran over to help her. I moved to the side and continued yelling for Rick, but he was not listening and instead, was waving the flag and yelling. In fact, everyone was screaming for Rick to get off the tree but he just ignored all of us. Mr. Baker was moving down closer to Rick and looked back at us as he continued shouting. “Get over there and into that rock inlet. Move it now! Go on, move!” The path was muddy and hard to walk on without slipping, but we all began trudging through it towards the little cave, which was about twenty yards down the path. And that’s when it started. I’ll never forget that sound as long as I live. There was a muffled suction noise that echoed with a profound gurgling mingled with running water. It grew louder and louder with each passing second. Suddenly, Beth pierced the sound waves with a terrifying shrill that made the hairs on my neck stand up. I looked up and I saw it. We were in the direct path of a massive mudslide that was about to burst forward.
