This is part of the series of stories featuring Quaid Hudson, the young cowboy and the enigmatic old desert shaman, Achai. Each book can be read as a separate story, but the stories sagas flow together into a single epic journey. Day of the Dead takes place in the days preceding that most important of Mexican festivals. A contemporary topic, the Mexican drug wars, set in a classic setting, out west on the Texas badlands. This is a unique take on a modern problem, that evil slithering across the Rio Grande. The plot and action in Day of the Dead is realistic and believable, but the power of timeless beliefs and superstitions cannot be ignored. Following Achai’s disruption of their affairs, the leaders of the Mexican drug cartels are locked in a ruthless and bloody turf war. Some of the protagonists are offered the services of Wynono, a rival shaman. The true motivation of this mysterious desert dweller is to get close to Achai and to neutralise his influence for good. Wynono is the true patron of evil and crosses the Rio Grande in his quest to destroy young Quaid’s happiness and with it, Achai as well. The complete sequence of Quaid Hudson adventures is “Curandero leon de montana”, “Vengeance of the Crossing”, “Day of the Dead”, “Love Triangle at Armorillion”, “Silverillion” , “Iron Shod”. and "Vegas Coyote". Each story stands as a completed novel. The reader does not have to have read the prequel stories to enjoy any of the books in the series.

This is a classic “coming of age” story, set in rural America, in the present day, against a backdrop of violent border drug wars along the Rio Grande. Young rancher Quaid Hudson and his Ma share their ranch with an enigmatic old desert shaman, Achai. Their quiet rural lives are changed forever by a violent brush with the Mexican drug cartels, a brush that Quaid naively engineers, against his mentor, Achai’s, advice. Death, betrayal and mistrust are suddenly thrust upon Quaid, as is his first love interest. He evades the sinister attentions of the Sinoloa drug cartel the first time around, but they are not finished with Quaid, or Achai or any close to the two. The wise old desert shaman represents something ancient and primal, something that the Mexican cartel should have recognised before they messed with him. This is a story at once gritty, sometimes violent, occasionally nostalgic for a simpler time, fast-paced and complex in plot, but at its core also romantic in its view of men and women and of good and evil.

As a piece of fiction, “After the Maya” takes a unique, human look, through the eyes of ordinary, fallible people, at the build-up to what could turn out, in retrospect, to have been a tipping point in our fragile and probably inconsequential “civilisation.” A young storm chaser, Osram, comes across a large iron meteorite on the sands of the desert in New Mexico. His only interest in this rare object lies in its potential monetary value, unaware that the appearance of this spectacular extraterrestrial artefact has been keenly awaited by people in tune with ancient prophecies and with the impending fulfilment of the most controversial and media hyped prophecy of all – the roll-over of the 2012 Mayan calendar, when for the first time in 26,000 years, our sun is due to be aligned with the centre of the Milky Way on earth’s winter solstice. Osram’s casual encounter on the desert highway with a couple of bike riders, and their subsequent violent death on Interstate-9, leads to Osram and his precious meteorite being traced, by more than one interested party, to his home town, where events rapidly spiral out of his control. It seems that all of the scheming and plotting around this valuable piece of space debris will come to nothing, running through greedy fingers like desert sand. In an ironic twist of human ignorance, the historic, centuries-old clash between religions, civilisations and hemispheres is brought to a head as the sacred object, together with its pursuers meet their fate in a totally unexpected way.
